The MGM's "Grand Lion," created in 1997, is 45 feet tall, 50 feet wide and weighs 50 tons. It is said to be the largest bronze lion sculpture monument in the Western Hemisphere.   Johnson's other works include a bronze statue at the Stratosphere Tower and a massive horse and chariot at Caesars Gauteng, South Africa.   Johnson, a self-taught artist who is considered one of the most prolific bronze lion sculptors of his time, had to overcome considerable adversity to attain his fame.   Back to the lions … on April 28th, 1912 — 13 days after Titanic went to the bottom of the Atlantic — an article in The Washington Post stated that the lions had been successfully put in place after the memorial had been under construction for eight years. Eight years and only the lions were in place! Below is an excerpt from the piece. The fact that the lions are copies of the British lions on the Trafalgar Square monument in England and the sight of the flag stretched under their bodes have caused many tourists and other observers to wonder just what the motif of the group is intended to express. Further investigation will reveal a pair of solid marble Chinese guardian lions, spaced a quarter-mile apart, surrounded by nothing but desert chaparral, hot sun, and unimpeded winds.   Most days you can see clear from the lions to the Amboy Crater, the geological remains of an extinct cinder cone volcano, five miles to the west—making the presence of these beautiful marble creatures that much more otherworldly.   Often called “foo dogs” in the west, Chinese guardian lions are most notably gendered by the tokens they hold. The male (symbolizing yang) holds an embroidered ball, representing a building or other space under his protection. The female (symbolizing yin) shelters a cub, representing nurturance and protection of the souls within a space. In this case, it seems the pair is tasked with keeping watch over the entire Mojave Desert and all who pass through.   They're heirloom quality. Your lions will be as beautiful decades from now as the day they arrive at your door.   They resemble the lions on the bridge in every way, down to the inscriptions along their sides to remind you of your love for the Old City.   The lions are hand cast then hand sculpted by Old World artisans in fine detail to give you eye-catching decor and timeless art pieces for your home.   In hand, your lions will have the smooth, cool f
