Step 1: Choose the Material
Material decides everything — the look, the weight, the price and how the lion ages. For outdoor residential lions, two materials dominate: natural marble and cast bronze.
Marble lion statues
Hand-carved from solid natural stone, marble is the material of European palaces, châteaux and grand estates. A white marble pair at your door says "this home is built to last." Marble is ideal if you value:
- Fine hand carving — every curl of the mane is carved by hand from a solid block
- An architectural, formal look that suits stone and stucco facades
- Color options — white, black, beige, red or gray marble, polished or honed
- Permanence — natural stone survives rain, frost and sun for generations
Bronze lion statues
Cast bronze allows a level of detail stone cannot reach — expressive faces, rippling muscles, decorative spheres and intricate bases. Bronze develops a rich patina over decades and is the standard for museum-quality lions. Choose bronze if you want:
- Lifelike detail — from the texture of the mane to the expression in the eyes
- Versatile finishes — antique brown, black, green patina, or even gold leaf
- Sculptures in the round — dramatic poses that look great from every angle
- Heirloom value — bronze lions are often passed down through generations
Not sure which? If your home is stone, stucco or classic in style, marble will blend beautifully. If you want a showpiece with rich detail and color, choose bronze. Our sales engineers can advise you free of charge.
Step 2: Get the Size Right
Size is the most common mistake buyers make — usually by choosing lions that are too small. A lion that is too small looks like a lawn ornament; one that is correctly proportioned looks like a guardian.
A practical rule of thumb: the lion's height should be roughly one third to one half of the height of the door or gate it flanks.
| Location | Recommended Lion Height |
|---|---|
| Standard front door (about 2.1 m / 7 ft) | 0.9 – 1.2 m (3 – 4 ft) |
| Grand entrance or double door | 1.2 – 1.6 m (4 – 5 ft) |
| Driveway gate posts | 1.2 – 1.8 m (4 – 6 ft) |
| Garden path or terrace accents | 0.6 – 0.9 m (2 – 3 ft) |
| Castle gates / monumental | 2 m and above (custom) |
Lions are almost always bought in pairs — one male, one female — for the classic symmetrical look. Tell us your door or gate height and we will recommend the perfect size.
Step 3: Pick a Pose & Style
The pose changes the personality of the lion. See our full breakdown in Different Types of Lion Statues, but here is the short version:
- Sitting / guardian pose — upright, alert, front paws forward. The classic "guardian lion" for front doors.
- Roaring — mouth open, mane full. Bold and dramatic, ideal for gates.
- Lying / reclining — relaxed and regal. Softer, great for gardens and terraces.
- Walking / striding — full of movement. Beautiful along long driveways.
- With ball — the traditional "lion holding a sphere," a symbol of power and vigilance.
- Winged or mythical — for a truly unique, conversation-starting piece.
Step 4: Plan the Placement
Where the lions stand matters as much as the lions themselves. The classic arrangements:
- Flanking the front door — one on each side, facing outward. The most traditional and most popular.
- Driveway gate posts — one on each post, facing the street. They "guard" the property line.
- End of a long driveway — walking or striding lions look magnificent here.
- Steps or terraces — sitting or lying lions beside staircases.
- Garden focal points — a single striking lion (e.g. winged) as a centerpiece.
Lions should always face outward (toward the street or the approach), never toward the house — they are guarding your home, not looking at it.
Step 5: Custom or Catalog?
Most of our lions are fully custom: you choose the exact size, marble color or bronze patina, and the carving details. You can also send us a photo of a lion you admire — from a château, a hotel, a magazine — and we will recreate it in your chosen material. Customization does not mean a huge price jump; it simply means the lion is made for your entrance, not for a warehouse.
The Final Checklist
- Material — marble for classic formality, bronze for detail and patina.
- Size — one third to one half the height of the door or gate; bigger beats smaller.
- Pose — match the personality of your home; sitting is the safe classic.
- Placement — pairs at the entrance or gate posts, facing outward.
- Quality — insist on solid natural marble or genuine cast bronze, never hollow fiberglass or painted cement pretending to be stone.
When in doubt, send us a photo of your entrance — we will recommend the material, size and pose, with a free quotation. See what a real marble lion costs in our guide on lion statue prices, or browse the lion gallery for ideas.
